Spy Shots Reveal Genesis GV70 SUV Extended-Range EV Version Undergoing Road Tests

Today, a new set of spy shots of the Genesis GV70 SUV surfaced online, revealing what appears to be a range-extended electric (EREV) prototype undergoing road testing.

From the photos, it’s clear that this prototype is not just a cosmetic refresh. Beneath the revised, more upright front and rear design hides an all-new powertrain system that combines a large-capacity battery with a small gasoline engine.

Technical Clues from the Undercarriage
A closer look at the underbody reveals some telling details. The prototype is equipped with a catalytic converter and an extended muffler—components absent from the current pure gasoline-powered GV70. Because the battery pack occupies the space traditionally used by the driveshaft tunnel, the exhaust system has been relocated and now runs lower and more exposed.

Another strong indication of its plug-in architecture: the vehicle features two filler caps, with the left side for refueling and the right side for charging—a hallmark of PHEV/EREV designs.

Expected Powertrain
Earlier this April, Hyundai Motor Group previewed a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder range-extender system. While not yet officially confirmed, industry observers widely expect this setup to debut in the GV70 EREV.

Exterior Updates
Visually, the prototype adopts a more upright front grille and hood, paired with sharper headlamps and a squarer shoulder line. At the rear, both the tailgate and taillights have been reworked, giving the SUV a more rugged, boxy stance that aligns with current styling trends in the premium SUV market.

Launch Timeline
According to previous reports, the Genesis GV70 EREV is expected to debut by Christmas 2026, coinciding with the mid-cycle facelift of the existing GV70 lineup. This timing suggests that Genesis is positioning the EREV as both a technological leap and a design refresh, reinforcing its strategy to broaden electrification options in the luxury SUV segment
