Elon Musk plans to go to India this month to meet with Modi and announce the construction of a factory.

Elon Musk of Tesla is expected to visit India this month to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is likely to announce plans to invest in and open a new factory in the country, Reuters cited two informed sources as reporting.

Sources said that Musk will meet with Modi in New Delhi in the week of the 22nd this month and will separately announce his India plans; other senior Tesla executives will also accompany Musk on the visit.

Neither Modi’s office nor Tesla has responded to requests for comment. The final itinerary of Musk’s trip to India may still be adjusted.

The last time Musk and Modi met was in New York in June last year. While considering building a factory in India, Tesla has been lobbying the country for several months to reduce import tariffs on electric vehicles. India announced a new electric vehicle policy last month, which will reduce the import tariffs on some models from 100% to 15% if the manufacturer invests at least $500 million and builds a factory in India.

Reuters previously reported that Tesla senior officials are expected to visit India this month to select the site for a factory that could require an investment of about $2 billion.

This week, Musk posted on X, saying, “India should have electric cars, just as other countries have electric cars. It is a natural thing to offer Tesla electric cars in India.”
