Starting from 37,800USD! The all-new Volvo XC70 is now on sale.

On September 27, the all-new Volvo XC70 was officially launched. The new model comes in four variants with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of RMB 416,900–496,900. A limited-time reference exclusive price is RMB 269,900–349,900, which is RMB 147,000 lower than the MSRP and RMB 30,000 lower than the previous pre-sale price. The all-new Volvo XC70 is the first model built on Volvo’s SMA architecture. It offers a pure electric range of over 200 km (CLTC) and a combined range of over 1,200 km. Positioned between the Volvo XC60 and XC90, it will act as a bridge model, providing users with more choices.

Although it is a hybrid, the all-new Volvo XC70’s front end looks like a pure electric car. The grille is completely sealed, possibly drawing on design elements from the Volvo EX90, such as the iconic Thor’s Hammer LED headlights. The front end appears very simple, with no messy lines or curves. The Volvo badge at the “grille” center becomes the visual focal point—paying tribute to Volvo tradition in the electric age. The lower part of the front features a black active air intake grille and split headlights—split headlights being an unexpected appearance on a Volvo. The XC70 will be available in Denim Blue, Desert Sand, Sunset Gray, and Pine Lake Green paint colors.

From the side, the all-new Volvo XC70 has simple lines and surfacing, with design elements such as black exterior mirror caps, semi-enclosed wheel rims, and a roof with flush roof rails. At the rear, it is equipped with multi-segment LED taillights, which the company calls the “Viking Battle Axe” design, extending upward on both sides to the edges of the rear window, continuing the family style. The license plate has been moved lower so it does not become the visual focal point, making the overall look cleaner and simpler. According to MIIT filings, the Volvo XC70 measures 4,815/1,890/1,650 mm (L/W/H) with a wheelbase of 2,895 mm, positioning it as a mid-to-large SUV.

Inside, the all-new Volvo XC70 retains a minimalist design. The cabin features three screens: a 15.4-inch central display, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and a 92-inch AR-HUD head-up display. The center armrest is extendable, and the hollow area with the lower storage box provides spacious flexibility. The cup holder is also sliding. The interior uses soft-light trim panels, fabric speaker covers, and diffused ambient lighting to create atmosphere. Notably, the new car offers a 23-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, with two speakers integrated into the driver’s headrest.

In terms of power, the all-new Volvo XC70 uses a 1.5T hybrid-dedicated engine combined with a single-motor or three-motor (P1+P2+P4) plug-in hybrid system. The engine’s maximum output is 120 kW, paired with a 3DHT hybrid-dedicated transmission. The single-motor model’s electric motor outputs 107 kW, with a total system power of 234 kW, a 21.1 kWh LFP battery, and a CLTC electric range of 116 km. The three-motor model uses a high-performance P1+P2+P4 electric drive system with a total system power of 340 kW, a 39.6 kWh NCM battery, and a CLTC electric range of 212 km, with a combined range of over 1,200 km.

From the naming, it’s clear how important this car is to Volvo—XC70 can be regarded as the progenitor of Volvo SUVs. Fortunately, the XC70 hasn’t completely abandoned the family design language and remains familiar, which is valuable at a time when many brands adopt aggressive designs to stand out, making it hard to link them to their brand heritage.

The all-new Volvo XC70 is positioned as a mid-to-large SUV, filling the market gap between the XC60 and XC90, a segment with high sales and attention. Overall, it competes with range-extender models like the Li Auto L6 and AITO M7. As for its traditional luxury rivals, BMW’s X3 completed a full model change this year, and the new Audi Q5L will be launched later this year.

Volvo was one of the first luxury brands to announce a full electrification strategy. By 2030, over 90% of Volvo’s global sales will come from pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The all-new Volvo XC70, as the first plug-in hybrid model built on the SMA platform, is a core strategic model for Volvo’s electrification transition and carries milestone significance for the brand. However, sales of Volvo’s electrified models have been lackluster—for instance, the Volvo XC60 PHEV sold only 4,867 units in the first eight months of the year. Whether the new XC70 can become Volvo’s next breakout hit remains to be seen.
