Brake failure! Multiple electric vehicles recalled

Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a recall notice. Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Volvo Car Sales (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. have filed recall plans with the State Administration for Market Regulation, in accordance with the “Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products” and the “Implementation Measures for the Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products.” They have decided to recall the following vehicles starting immediately:

A total of 3,378 domestic plug-in hybrid XC60 vehicles manufactured between April 8, 2024, and June 11, 2025; 1 domestic pure electric C40 vehicle manufactured on July 25, 2022; and 1 domestic pure electric XC40 vehicle manufactured on August 9, 2023.

A total of 1,520 domestic plug-in hybrid S90 vehicles manufactured between May 6, 2024, and June 11, 2025; and 4 domestic plug-in hybrid S60 vehicles manufactured between August 4, 2021, and October 24, 2022.

A total of 764 imported plug-in hybrid XC90 vehicles manufactured between April 25, 2024, and June 11, 2025.

A total of 2 domestic pure electric Polestar 2 vehicles manufactured between November 1, 2021, and November 6, 2022.

According to the announcement, some of the vehicles within the recall range may experience brake failure due to software deviations in the brake control module. Specifically, when a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is in “B” mode or a battery electric vehicle (BEV) is in “single-pedal driving” mode, and the vehicle continues to coast downhill for over 90 seconds without pressing the brake pedal, the vehicle may lose its braking function, posing a safety risk.

The potential dangers of brake failure are multifaceted and extremely severe. On the road, vehicles typically travel at high speeds, and if the brakes fail, the vehicle will not be able to slow down or stop as intended by the driver. This makes it difficult to avoid obstacles such as other vehicles, pedestrians, or traffic accidents ahead, significantly increasing the risk of rear-end collisions, crashes, and other serious traffic accidents. To address this product defect, Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Volvo Car Sales (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will commission authorized Volvo car dealers to upgrade the brake control module software free of charge for the recalled vehicles to eliminate the safety risk.
