Li Yunfei confirms: the SHARK pickup will be launched in the domestic market

On October 8, Li Yunfei, General Manager of Brand and Public Relations at BYD Group, responded to netizens on social media, stating that the BYD SHARK new energy pickup is already in the planning stage and will eventually be launched in the domestic market.

The BYD SHARK was first unveiled in Mexico in May 2025, priced at 899,980–969,800 Mexican pesos (approximately RMB 386,600–416,500). Built on the DMO platform, it adopts a powertrain consisting of a 1.5T engine paired with dual motors on the front and rear axles. Its main competitors include pickup models such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Exterior
The BYD SHARK’s front fascia features an integrated and rugged design. The grille carries a large “BYD” logo, flanked by C-shaped daytime running lights and a light bar that outlines the front profile. A through-type light strip connects the upper section, while the lower bumper houses a millimeter-wave radar and silver skid plate, giving the vehicle an imposing stance. However, such design cues are relatively common among pickups, lacking some uniqueness.

From the side, the SHARK comes with black fender flares, body cladding, roof rails, and a sports bar to enhance its off-road presence. The C-pillar features a blacked-out treatment to create a floating roof effect, adding a touch of style. The model also uses conventional door handles, square-shaped side mirrors, fixed side steps, roof racks, and sports bar design. Charging and fueling ports are located on both sides beneath the sports bar.

At the rear, the SHARK sports a large BYD logo along with vertical taillights and a through-type light bar, echoing the front design. In terms of size, the vehicle measures 5,457/1,971/1,925 mm (length/width/height) with a 3,260 mm wheelbase. It offers a 1,450L cargo bed, approach and departure angles of 31° and 19.3° respectively, and a full-load ground clearance of 210 mm.

Interior
The interior design of the BYD SHARK is similar to that of the Fangchengbao Leopard 5, featuring BYD’s signature rotatable 12.8-inch central screen, a new four-spoke steering wheel with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12-inch W-HUD head-up display. Orange accents are integrated into the air vents and stitching. The secondary instrument panel area mirrors that of the Leopard 5 and includes a 50W wireless charging pad for smartphones, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Powertrain & Performance
The SHARK is powered by a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 1.5T engine and dual motors. The front motor delivers a maximum power of 170 kW (231 hp) and 310 Nm of torque, while the rear motor provides 150 kW (204 hp) and 340 Nm. Combined system output exceeds 430 hp, enabling 0–100 km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds. Fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km with low battery and 1.536L/100km when fully charged. It comes with a 29.58 kWh battery, providing 100 km NEDC pure electric range and a total range of 840 km.

The vehicle features double-wishbone independent suspension front and rear, a non-load-bearing body structure, CTC (cell-to-chassis) battery integration technology, and a virtual differential lock. It offers three driving modes—sand, mud, and snow. Its maximum towing capacity is 2,500 kg, payload capacity 835 kg, and it supports V2L external power output. For charging, a 40 kW fast charger can replenish the battery from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.

Market Outlook
At present, the BYD SHARK is mainly targeted at overseas markets, where it competes with the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Compared to these rivals, the SHARK offers a larger body, higher equipment levels, and better fuel economy. However, BYD’s brand recognition abroad remains limited. According to Li Yunfei, the SHARK will eventually enter the domestic market—it is only a matter of time. If launched in China, its main competitor would be the Great Wall Shanhai Pao Hi4-T. It is also speculated that BYD might introduce a new sub-brand dedicated to the commercial vehicle segment for the domestic rollout.
