MINI Issues Another Recall in China Over Battery Overheating

On May 30, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced a new vehicle recall. Beam Automotive Co., Ltd.—the 50:50 joint venture between Great Wall Motor and BMW Group—filed a recall plan in accordance with the Regulations on the Administration of Defective Automobile Product Recalls.

Recall ID S2025M0083V:

Effective immediately, 55 domestically produced MINI COOPER EVs manufactured between June 1, 2024, and August 17, 2024 will be recalled.

In addition, 15 domestically produced MINI ACEMAN EVs manufactured between January 10, 2024, and September 18, 2024 are affected.

According to the notice, some vehicles may suffer from battery cell misalignment during production, potentially causing abnormal self-discharge. Under extreme conditions, this defect could lead to battery overheating and safety risks. To address the issue, Beam Automotive will replace defective battery modules free of charge.

Beam Automotive launched the MINI COOPER EV on July 6, 2024, as its first locally produced model. The small all-electric SUV measures 3858/1756/1458 mm with a 2526 mm wheelbase, priced between RMB 189,800 and RMB 266,800 (~USD 26,500–37,400). Its second model, the MINI ACEMAN EV, debuted on August 27, 2024. Positioned between the five-door MINI and the Countryman, the ACEMAN measures 4076/1754/1515 mm with a 2606 mm wheelbase, priced between RMB 209,900 and RMB 279,900 (~USD 29,400–39,200).

While the number of affected vehicles is relatively small, this marks Beam Automotive’s second recall this year. On February 21, the company recalled 130 MINI COOPER EVs and 47 MINI ACEMAN EVs over the same battery production defect.

On the same day, Mercedes-Benz (China) Sales Co., Ltd. also filed a recall with SAMR. Recall ID S2025M0089V covers 1,715 imported G-Class SUVs produced between April 2, 2024, and October 11, 2024. The issue stems from software deviation in the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) control unit, which may cause incorrect warning messages on the instrument cluster in the event of hardware failure—failing to comply with national safety standards. Affected vehicles will receive a free software upgrade at authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers.
