New Leapmotor C16 Launched in China, Starting at $20,800 USD

On June 18, Leapmotor officially launched the 2026 C16, introducing a total of 8 trims across two seating configurations: the Champion 6-seater and a newly added 5-seater version. Prices range from RMB 151,800 to RMB 181,800 (~USD 20,800–24,900). Specifically, six 6-seater variants are priced between RMB 151,800 and RMB 181,800, while the two new 5-seater models are priced from RMB 168,800 to RMB 178,800. For comparison, the 2024 Leapmotor C16 was priced between RMB 155,800 and RMB 189,800.

Design and Features
As a mid-cycle refresh, the 2026 C16 largely carries over the exterior and interior design of the 2024 model, retaining its rounded, full-bodied look. The biggest update is the addition of a 5-seat version, alongside significant upgrades to equipment and driving range. Notably, all trims now come standard with lidar and 28 driver-assist sensors.

Up front, the C16 maintains a closed grille design with sleek through-type headlamps, while vertical air ducts and a trapezoidal lower intake give it a sportier look. The side profile features a floating roof with blacked-out B- and C-pillars, hidden electronic door handles, and 21-inch wheels. Six body colors are offered, including Galaxy Silver, Star Purple, Emerald Green, Pearl White, Twilight Gray, and Metallic Black. Dimensions remain 4915/1905/1770mm with a 2825mm wheelbase, positioning it as a mid-to-large SUV. At the rear, slim LED taillights echo the front design, complemented by blackened trim and bold bumper styling.

Interior and Technology
Inside, the cabin is offered in Red Sunset Orange and Starry Purple. The 2026 C16 is equipped with a 14.6-inch central display, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch rear entertainment screen, 21-speaker audio, 360-degree surround view, and wireless charging. A standout new feature is the addition of an 8.1-liter built-in refrigerator. All trims also come with a 128-line lidar system powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8650 chip, enabling end-to-end assisted driving.

Seating options now include both a 2+2+2 six-seat layout and a new 5-seat configuration with more rear legroom. Both first- and second-row seats gain massage functions, while the driver’s seat adds lumbar support. The five-seat models further come with 10 exclusive premium features, such as one-touch “bed mode,” luxury rear seating with central armrest, premium audio, and the onboard fridge.

Powertrain and Range
The C16 continues to be offered in both pure electric and range-extended versions.

Pure EV version: Single motor with 220 kW output and 360 Nm torque, paired with an 81.9 kWh battery pack for a CLTC range of 630 km.

EREV version: 1.5L range extender (70 kW) with a 170 kW drive motor, paired with a 38.7 kWh battery pack for 280 km CLTC pure-electric range. This is an upgrade from the previous 28.4 kWh pack (200 km range).

Market Positioning
First launched in June 2024 on Leapmotor’s LEAP 3.0 architecture, the C16 is positioned as a mid-to-large SUV with both pure electric and range-extended options. Retail data shows 24,178 units sold from January to May 2025, ranking fourth among Leapmotor’s product lineup.

With its upgraded features, larger battery, and added five-seat version, the 2026 Leapmotor C16 is set to compete against rivals such as the GAC Aion Hyper S7, Chery Exeed Sterra ET, and Dongfeng eπ008. Whether these improvements will translate into stronger sales remains to be seen.
