Production to End Next Year! Official Images of the Volkswagen Touareg Final Edition Released.

On October 16, Volkswagen released official images of the Touareg Final Edition model. According to previous reports, the Touareg will cease supply to the Chinese market in November this year and will officially stop production at the Slovakia factory next year. As for the reason for the discontinuation, sources indicated that “the decision to stop supplying the Chinese market is due to the poor sales of the model in recent years.”

Before the official production halt, Volkswagen launched the Touareg Final Edition as a farewell model. The new vehicle will be available for pre-order until the end of March next year, with a starting price of €75,025 (approximately ¥626,000) in Germany. In comparison, the Touareg currently imported to the domestic market is priced between ¥508,800 and ¥793,800.

From the official images, the Touareg Final Edition retains the iconic Volkswagen front design. Notably, as the Final Edition model, the new vehicle features “Final Edition” exclusive branding on several details such as the rear window trim, welcome pedals, dashboard trim, and leather-wrapped gear lever to highlight the vehicle’s unique identity.

In terms of specific details, the new vehicle’s front features an air intake grille with horizontal chrome trim, with a continuous light strip running through the center and an illuminated Volkswagen logo that connects the two-part headlights. This design is highly recognizable when lit at night. On the side, the vehicle has smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front to the rear lights, creating a long, dynamic profile. The roof is equipped with a black luggage rack, and various details are adorned with black accents. Large-sized wheels enhance the vehicle’s sporty attributes. The official dimensions have not been disclosed yet. For reference, the current Touareg measures 4889 (4878) mm in length, 1984 mm in width, and 1697 (1694) mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2899 mm, positioning it as a mid-to-large-sized SUV. The rear of the new model features a continuous rear light design with intricate and refined internal structures, offering a unique light effect when illuminated.

Inside, the new vehicle mainly features black interior tones, creating a luxurious and spacious feel. In terms of configuration, the new Touareg will be equipped with a 15.05-inch central touchscreen and a 12-inch LCD instrument display. The interior ambient lighting has also been re-adjusted. As for powertrain specifications, the official details have not yet been released.

The Touareg is produced by Volkswagen’s German factory and imported to the Chinese market. It is a flagship SUV under the Volkswagen brand, built on the Volkswagen Group’s PL71 platform and developed alongside the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. Currently, the available Touareg models in China include the 2025 and 2023 versions, with engine options of 2.0T and 3.0T, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. All models come equipped with a Torsen central differential and an all-wheel-drive system. The 2.0T engine produces a maximum power of 195 kW and a peak torque of 370 Nm, while the 3.0T engine generates a maximum power of 250 kW and a peak torque of 450 Nm.

Looking back at the history of the Touareg, the model has gone through three generations and has a development history of 30 years. The first generation was launched in 2002, offering diesel and gasoline engine options, including five, six, eight, ten, and twelve-cylinder engines. It was officially showcased at the 2003 Shanghai Auto Show and was introduced to the Chinese market in 2004, with the 2004 3.2L V6 model priced at ¥822,800. The first-generation model sold a total of 471,000 units. The second-generation Touareg was released in 2010, based on the upgraded PL72 platform, and introduced the 3.0L V6 hybrid system. The second-generation model sold a total of 483,000 units. In 2018, the third-generation Touareg was globally unveiled in China, built on the Volkswagen MLB Evo platform.

According to statistics, the Touareg has sold over 1.2 million units globally. However, with the rapid growth of the new energy vehicle market and adjustments in Volkswagen’s brand strategy, the Touareg’s lifecycle is expected to come to an end next year. The latest reports indicate that while the Touareg will cease production next year, the Volkswagen brand does not intend to completely retire the “Touareg” name. It may continue in the future with an electric version. Whether this news is true remains unclear, and it will depend on official announcements.
