Rivian Recalls Over 24,000 R1S and R1T Vehicles Over Driver-Assist Software Glitch

Sept 12 (Reuters) – The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Thursday that Rivian Automotive is recalling 24,214 of its R1S SUVs and R1T pickups after a software defect was found in its driver-assistance system.

The flaw could cause Rivian’s “hands-free” highway assist system to misidentify vehicles ahead, increasing the risk of a crash. According to NHTSA, the problem mainly affects certain 2025 model-year vehicles running older versions of the company’s software in the United States.

Rivian said it has already issued an over-the-air update to fix the problem. The defect was identified after a crash involving a 2025 R1S, in which the system misclassified a slow-moving vehicle, preventing the driver from regaining control in time.

Automakers have been racing to roll out advanced driver-assistance features such as lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control. Rivian is also developing so-called “hands-off” and “eyes-off” systems as part of its push into autonomous driving technology.
