On August 27th, Volvo Car Asia Pacific officially unveiled the all-new Volvo XC70 and announced its pre-sale prices at RMB 299,900 and RMB 329,900 respectively. It is understood that the all-new Volvo XC70 is the first model developed by Volvo based on the SMA architecture, positioned between the Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90. While specific dimensions have not been officially released, observations of the vehicle at the launch event confirm it is at least a mid-size SUV. Based on the launch timeline, the new model is expected to hit the market within this year. According to official data, the pre-orders for the all-new Volvo XC70 exceeded 5,000 units within 85 minutes of the pre-sale opening.

Despite being a hybrid model, the front face of the all-new Volvo XC70 resembles that of a pure electric vehicle, featuring a fully enclosed grille—likely drawing design cues from the Volvo EX90. For instance, it retains the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlight assembly. The entire front fascia adopts a minimalist design with no cluttered lines or curves; the Volvo logo at the “grille” serves as the visual focal point, blending a nod to Volvo’s heritage with a modern touch fitting for the electrification era. The lower section of the front bumper consists of a black active air intake grille and split-type headlights—a design element rarely seen in previous Volvo models, making it an unexpected addition. It is reported that the Volvo XC70 will be available in exterior paint colors including Denim Blue, Desert Sand, Dawn Gray, and Pine Lake Green.
On the side profile, the all-new Volvo XC70 features clean lines and a sleek surface. Design elements include black exterior mirror caps, semi-enclosed wheel rims, and an integrated roof rack. At the rear, the vehicle is equipped with a multi-segment LED taillight assembly, officially dubbed the “Viking Axe” design—extending upward to both sides of the rear window, which continues Volvo’s signature family styling. Additionally, the license plate mount is positioned lower, preventing it from dominating the visual center and ensuring a neat, uncluttered rear appearance. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing data, the Volvo XC70 has dimensions of 4,815mm (length) × 1,890mm (width) × 1,650mm (height) with a wheelbase of 2,895mm, officially classifying it as a mid-to-large SUV.
Inside the cabin, the all-new Volvo XC70 maintains a minimalist design philosophy. The cockpit system comprises three displays: a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 92-inch AR-HUD (Augmented Reality Head-Up Display). The central armrest is telescopic, with a hollowed-out area and a lower storage compartment providing spacious and flexible storage space; the cup holders also feature a sliding design. The interior incorporates soft-light trim panels, fabric speaker grilles, and diffused ambient lighting, creating a sophisticated and cozy atmosphere. Notably, the new model is equipped with a 23-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, with 2 speakers integrated into the driver’s seat headrest.
In terms of powertrain, the all-new Volvo XC70 is built on the SMA architecture and is powered by a 1.5T plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. The 1.5T engine delivers a maximum power of 120kW, paired with a P1+P2+P4 electric drive system and a 3-speed DHT hybrid transmission. The combined system power reaches 340kW. According to official claims, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.28 seconds when fully charged. Furthermore, it adopts a hybrid battery cell solution combining lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cells, with a maximum battery capacity of 39.6kWh and a CLTC pure electric range of 200km. Additionally, the new model supports an external discharge power of 6kW.
The significance of the XC70 to Volvo is evident from its naming—after all, the XC70 can be regarded as the “pioneer” of Volvo’s SUV lineup. Fortunately, the all-new XC70 has not abandoned Volvo’s traditional family design language; it still retains the familiar Volvo style, which is perhaps its most commendable aspect. In the current fiercely competitive market, many brands adopt overly radical designs to stand out, often losing their connection to their brand heritage—something Volvo has avoided with the new XC70.
Currently, Volvo Car Asia Pacific’s SUV models sold in China include the XC90, XC60, XC40, and EX30. From January to July 2025, the XC60 was the top-selling model with 40,013 units sold, while plug-in hybrid models accounted for only 4,322 units. Judging from its positioning (as indicated by its naming), the Volvo XC70 sits above the XC60 in the product lineup. With a starting pre-sale price of RMB 299,900, the official launch price is expected to be even lower.
