Extended range for the entire lineup! Xpeng Motors has submitted two more extended-range vehicles for approval

In the latest issue of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s filing catalog, Automotive Industry Focus has obtained the new vehicle filing images for Xpeng Motors’ P7+ Extended Range version and G6 Extended Range version. The product name is listed as “Plug-in Hybrid Electric Multi-purpose Passenger Vehicle.” Currently, Xpeng Motors has filed for four extended-range models: X9, P7+, G6, and G7, all equipped with a 1.5T engine as the range extender, with the vehicles expected to launch as early as this year.

In terms of appearance, the Xpeng P7+ Extended Range version largely maintains the design of the pure electric version but with some adjustments. The front features a large closed grille, paired with a continuous light strip and split headlight design. However, the black trim that previously extended downward from the lower headlights has been removed. The lower bumper now features larger active ventilation openings to improve engine cooling efficiency. At the rear, the main adjustment is to the tail lights, which adopt a new dual-layer continuous design, forming a “D” shape. The rear bumper is mostly body-colored, differing from the pure electric P7+, which had a large area of black gloss treatment. In terms of size, the P7+ Extended Range version measures 5071/1937/1512 mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 3000 mm. Aside from a 15mm increase in length, other dimensions remain unchanged.

As for power, the P7+ Extended Range version is equipped with a 1.5T engine from Harbin Dongan Automotive Power Co., Ltd., with a maximum power output of 110 kW. It is paired with a single motor, which delivers a peak power of 180 kW, matching the maximum power of the pure electric P7+ Long Range Max model. The P7+ Extended Range version is also equipped with a lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by Eve Energy, though the battery capacity and electric range have not yet been disclosed.

Next, let’s look at the Xpeng G6 Extended Range version. Its appearance is mostly identical to the pure electric version, with a front design featuring a continuous headlight strip, integrated laser radar beneath the headlights, and hexagonal matrix-patterned decorative elements in the air intake. The rear LED light strip is similarly split. In terms of size, the G6 Extended Range version measures 4771/1920/1650 mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 2890 mm.

In terms of power, the G6 Extended Range version, like the P7+ Extended Range, is equipped with a 1.5T engine from Dongan Power as a range extender, paired with a single motor that delivers a maximum power of 218 kW. This is consistent with the maximum motor power of the currently available pure electric G6. It also uses a lithium iron phosphate battery, though the battery capacity and electric range have not yet been revealed.

Xpeng Motors is set to officially launch a new electric system, called the “Xpeng Kunpeng Super Electric System,” at the 2024 AI Technology Day. This marks Xpeng’s formal entry into the extended-range hybrid market. The system is built on an 800V high-voltage silicon carbide platform and integrates cutting-edge technologies, including 5C supercharging AI batteries, hybrid silicon carbide coaxial electric drive, silent range extender, and AI-based battery health monitoring and AI power systems. The “Kun” represents the super range extender system, which uses next-generation range extension technology, while the “Peng” continues to represent Xpeng’s pure electric system, highlighting the company’s commitment to developing both electric and extended-range hybrid technologies in parallel.

According to the plan, Xpeng Motors will launch at least five extended-range models, covering both sedans and SUVs. Most of these models will feature both pure electric and extended-range hybrid power systems. Currently, Xpeng Motors has filed for the X9 Extended Range, P7+ Extended Range, G6 Extended Range, and G7 Extended Range models, and it is expected that other models, such as the P7 and G9, will also be included in the future.

Industry experts suggest that Xpeng’s entry into the extended-range hybrid market will intensify market competition and encourage faster technological innovation and product optimization across the industry. Xpeng’s technological advantage in intelligent driving is expected to provide new competitiveness to extended-range hybrid models, pushing the hybrid market toward greater intelligence. Xpeng’s entry into the market will further expand the extended-range hybrid market, attracting more consumers and positively impacting industry development.

Currently, most manufacturers entering the extended-range hybrid market are adopting a “two-legged approach.” For example, Li Auto has launched the Li Auto i8 and i6 models, while AITO’s M7, M8, and M9 all offer pure electric versions. From the current market situation, hybrid models still have a broader consumer base compared to pure electric models. Meanwhile, more traditional automakers, such as SAIC Volkswagen, Buick, and Ford, are entering the market and planning or launching extended-range versions of their models, which will further intensify competition in this sector.
